As part of three of our research projects to date, we have been able to launch dedicated online platforms. These websites offer in-depth information, interactive maps, and searchable databases, and are intended as a contribution to making individual life stories visible within the broader context of global consequences of war.

Encampment – Camps in the Soviet Occupation Zone, 1945–1955

The research project “Encampment in the Soviet Occupation Zone of Austria” identified and documented around 250 camps that existed during the postwar period from 1945 to 1955 in the former Soviet occupation zone (Lower Austria, Burgenland, parts of Upper Austria, and Vienna). The information and materials were compiled on a website featuring an interactive online map of the camps.

Austrians in British Commando Units

As part of the research project “The Unknown: Austrian Exiles as Commando Soldiers in the British Armed Forces,” the names and basic biographical data of approximately 40 Austrian commando soldiers—some of whom carried out spectacular missions—are being identified and documented in a database.

Austrians in the 10th Mountain Division

The bilingual online portal for the research project “Austrians in the 10th Mountain Division” documents the names and short biographies of over 100 Austrians—most of whom fled the country after 1938—who served in the U.S. Army’s first and only ski and mountain unit during the Second World War, contributing to the “resistance from abroad” against Nazi Germany. A historical essay on the history of this “ski troop,” along with numerous images, statistics, an interactive database, and a selection of media reports and short videos on the topic, is freely accessible in both German and English.
