Die Südweststeiermark im NS-Regime

Project “Die Südweststeiermark im NS-Regime”

A folding map featuring 19 selected memorial sites relating to Nazi history in southwestern Styria brings a dark period to light.

About the project:

In 2023, the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Research on the Consequences of War, in cooperation with the Institute of History at the University of Graz, began examining the Nazi era in the districts of Leibnitz and Deutschlandsberg. The first result of this work is a folding map featuring 19 selected locations with connections to the Nazi era.

The decision by the Southwestern Styria region to focus more on remembering and commemorating its own history during the Nazi era is an important and challenging step. While public remembrance culture relating to the Nazi era in Austria focuses heavily on the Mauthausen concentration camp system and urban centers with formerly large Jewish communities, there is much less discussion of this topic at the local or regional level in rural areas.

The activities to come to terms with National Socialism in southwest Styria were carried out as part of the project ArchaeoRegion Südweststeiermark – Archäologie und Zeitgeschichte and are supported by funds from the Steiermärkischen Landes- und Regionalentwicklungsgesetzes.
