The book „Österreich und der Kalte Krieg. Ein Balanceakt zwischen Ost und West,“ published by Günter Bischof and Peter Ruggenthaler, Deputy Director of the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Research on the Consequences of War, in 2022, is now available in English.

About the Book 

This book is the first history of the Cold War in Austria in English. It covers East-West tensions from the immediate postwar period to 1989/90. It delves into Austria’s mediation efforts between East and West and its role as a „bridgebuilder“ between the Cold War blocs. It also covers issues such as the cultural Cold War, Vienna as a haven for intelligence services, and the nuclear era, as well as Austria’s failed attempts to join the European Economic Community.
